Why is there lots of knife crime in England?

I am from Australia, 21 year old white female. I recently went to England to visit my family who live about an hour outside London. Everyday I was in England I heard in the news about youths stabbing each other. Coming from Australia, where violent crimes are relatively rare, I was really scared. What I found most disturbing, was that my English family were totally desensitised … like, the stabbings each day didn’t phase them a bit. Why is knife crime so big there? I also noticed a lot of foreigners working and living in England. Why so many?
